Sports Massage Therapy

Sport Massage is used to prepare athletes to perform at their best avoiding injuries before and during a competition. To remedy injuries sustained during sport or work activities. It works by releasing muscle tension and restoring balance to the musculoskeletal system. It reduces strain and discomfort caused by training or participating in sport and it encourages the body to heal and repair any injuries sustained. In today’s computer dominated work place, it is also beneficial for neck and shoulders injuries caused by remaining in the same position for a long time.Together with the manipulation of the muscles by massage, stretching of the limbs, pressure points techniques are used to aid recovery and to prevent further damage to the muscles. It is recommended that all sports persons should have regular sport massages as a form of injury prevention. This applies to anybody doing strenuous jobs or activities or in general musculoskeletal discomfort.

Although sport massage is not entirely pain free, the intensity is controlled by the client at all time who is actively encouraged to report any level of pain, even if very small. Also, to mention any feeling of discomfort as sometime more 'delicate' areas may need to be treated.

Various benefits are:

Increased blood flow
Increased joint range of motion
Increased flexibility
Increased elimination of exercise waist products (lactic acid)
Increased sense of well being
Reduction in muscle tension
Reduction of tension
Reduction in muscle spasms
Reduced chance of injury
Faster recovery time

What will happen at the first consultation?

During your first visit a full case history will be taken asking detailed questions about your presentation, past medical history, lifestyle and exercises goals and training demands.

You will be given an evaluation (a series of movements) with orthopaedic and diagnostic screening tests.

After the assessment, a full diagnosis will be discussed with the patient and treatment given.  Remedial advice and preventative exercise will also be discussed.

How long is each treatment?

Our initial appointments are 60 minutes as a full case history will need to be taken. Follow up treatments can be booked for either 30 minutes or 60 minutes dependent on the patients needs.

What should I wear?

It is helpful to wear comfortable clothing and underwear. You will normally be asked to remove some of your clothing, down to your underwear if necessary. Aqueous cream is used as a lubricant during soft tissue massage and towels are provided for modesty and to cover over clothing plus areas of the body not involved in the treatment.
